VP Mphoko urges churches to contribute towards development

VICE-PRESIDENT Phelekezela Mphoko has said churches should put more effort in developmental projects across the country to complement Government in improving people’s lives.

Speaking during a meeting where he was invited by South Africa-based Zimbabwean businessman, Mr Justice Maphosa who is the founder and chief executive officer of Big Time Strategic Group of companies and sponsor of the annual Gwanda Gospel Show at the Brethren-In-Christ Church in Gwanda Town yesterday, VP Mphoko said Mr Maphosa should also blend his gospel show with development.

“I know this is a calling from God and we appreciate this but when we grew up we knew there were three important things, the church, the school and parents. So I urge you to be serious and mould the youths into responsible citizens. Also do some development here or anywhere in the country where you get land so that you contribute towards economic development, that’s what we did as Choppies and now we employ 2 000 workers,” said VP Mphoko.

He said Mr Maphosa can also venture into various businesses including mining.

“You can invest in mining or properties but be careful of the politics of poverty, everyone will come to you wanting money. The best for you is to do business quietly, don’t go around saying you want to do this and that otherwise that may disrupt your programmes,” he said.

Mr Maphosa said he wanted to plough back into the community which he grew in. He built a church with a 1 000 seater auditorium in Gwanda among many projects he is sponsoring in the Matabeleland South provincial capital and across the country.
