Mother, son killed in scotch cart accident

A WOMAN and her 12-year-old son from Mangwe, Matabeleland South died after a scotch cart they were travelling in overturned and trapped them underneath.

Vivian Ncube (42) and her son Thulisile Ncube of Ngulubeni area were on their way to fetch wooden poles when the incident occurred last Thursday. Chief Tshitshi confirmed the incident which occurred within his area of jurisdiction.

“There is a woman from Ngulubeni area and her 12-year-old son who died while travelling in a donkey drawn scotch cart along a footpath in their village. The scotch cart hit a tree stump and overturned.

“The woman and her son were thrown out of the scotch cart and it trapped them underneath.

“They both died on the spot and their bodies were only found several hours later,” he said.

The village head of the area Mr Madodana Ncube said Vivian and her son left their homestead around 3pm to fetch wooden poles from a nearby bush. He said Vivian’s sister, Ms Sithembiso Ncube later became worried after they failed to return. Mrs Ncube followed her sister and nephew and found their bodies still trapped underneath the scotch cart.

“Sithembiso became suspicious after it became dark and her sister and nephew had not returned home when they left in the afternoon as she expected them before sunset. She followed them and found their bodies trapped underneath the scotch cart which had overturned. It appears that no one went past that foot path after the incident happened which explains why they had not been found. Sithembiso rushed back home and alerted village elders of the incident,” he said.
