Ban on night driving welcome but . . .

-

ALTHOUGH much has been said about night driving ban it will also be good; look at how that ban will affect our economy. I think the best solution to reduce these accidents is to encourage motorists to use roadworthy vehicles as well as encouraging long distance bus drivers, truck drivers to rest first before they begin their long journeys because if we can just ban people from driving at night we will definitely have a disaster on our roads during the day.

Zimbabwe has a lot of vehicles and if we can say all of them must use our roads during the day it’s just another way of creating some unnecessary congestion on our roads. Don’t forget that we also have foreign registered small vehicles and also haulage trucks which use our roads on their way to other countries and if they will be only allowed to travel during the day then this can cause some inconveniences to many people.

We also need to remember that there is no employment in the country at the moment and most Zimbabweans who are well-known the world over for working hard take night buses to go and buy their goods from neighbouring countries for resale back home and if they will not be allowed to travel at night then how are they going to survive with their families?

We were very happy when we heard that some major roads such as the Harare-Beitbridge road will be dualised and I think dualisation of such roads will reduce some accidents as most roads in the country are very narrow and this is the reason why we have so many accidents, not to solemnly blame it on night driving.
