Albert Nyathi backs Byo gospel artistes to win

- Kudzai Mpangi Sunday Life Reporter

CELEBRATED poet, musician, actor and writer Albert Nyathi believes that gospel musicians from Bulawayo who participated in last weekend’s Just Gospel auditions are good enough to go all the way and win the competition.

“So far what I have seen is that Bulawayo can make it to the top and musicians from here can pocket the grand prize as they have proved that they can make it with their angelic voices and that’s what this initiative is looking for.

“They are really going far with these competitions and other towns should also make an effort to bring out the best of what they have,” he said.

Nyathi has, over the years, been instrumental in identifying and developing talent in the arts sector.

He has often backed and participated in initiatives that are designed for talent identification and development.

He is a judge at the ongoing Just Gospel auditions which kicked off at Life Spring Ministries in Bulawayo last week and the dub poet was charmed by the talent on show.

On the sidelines of the auditions, Nyathi revealed to Sunday Life his experiences as a talent judge who has been privileged to work at various events around the country. He said he has ‘never come across such a group of talented people who aspire to be one of the best gospel musicians’.

“I have judged so many events over the years and I have seen lots of talent and those that don’t have any at all. But these auditions have revealed a lot of talent that Bulawayo has and it’s amazing to be among such great talents,” Nyathi said.

He said the Just Gospel initiative is an exciting event that will unearth talent and provide a platform for the discovery and development of gospel artistes in the country. Nyathi said he was surprised why such great talented people have not yet recorded.

“I am surprised why most of the contestants have this much talent but have not recorded their work. Some of these artistes have what it takes to record quality gospel music immediately. I hate ordinary and at this event I have been listening to something that I can marvel at and Bulawayo has shown that it has a lot of extraordinary voices,” Nyathi said.
