Zimbabwe Christian Alliance partners Zec
THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has partnered with the Zimbabwe Christian Alliance in its mop up exercise in Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South in ensuring that the Christian community registers to vote.
The Zimbabwe Christian Alliance (ZCA) is working through church structures to encourage people who did not register during the initial phases of the BVR registration to go and register during the mop exercise which ends on 8 February.
In an interview, ZCA executive director, Reverend Useni Sibanda, said their partnership has enabled them to move Zec mobile registration to churches.
“We launched this exercise at Apostolic Faith Mission Church in Bulawayo. On that day alone by 2pm Zec had registered more than 600 people from the city which was quite a huge turnout,” he said.
The organisation has been working with Zec doing door to door campaigns as well as providing pastors to registration centres who are commissioner of oaths.
Zimbabwe Christian Alliance has about 20 young volunteers that are working with Zec and are moving around with transport to ferry people who need to go and register.
“I think what has been also amazing is the use of young people to mobilise other young people. We noticed that many youths had not registered and so we thought voter education from one youth to another will be more effective,” he said.
Zimbabwe Christian Alliance has teams that are working in Hwange, Tsholotsho, Kezi, Beitbridge, Binga and various parts of the country. A number of local artistes have also been involved in the programme.
