Werret, Cyprianos dominate men’s swimming championsh­ips

MATABELELA­ND swimmers Cory Werret and Denilson Cyprianos proved their mettle at the Senior National Swimming Championsh­ips that ended in the City last week as they led the points table with scores above 100 points.

The two swimmers were the only males to rake in more than 100 points with Werret (14) coming tops with 118 points as he pipped Cyprianos (16) to the men’s plate by a single point.

In the ladies category, Paige Van der Westhuizen (15) exhibited that she could be the next Kirsty Coventry as she dominated her age category coming out first in almost all of the events that she took part in.

Werret made a clean sweep in the breaststro­ke events clinching gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m races while also claiming gold in the 50m freestyle but tool silver in the 50, 100 and 200m backstroke, 100m and 200m freestyle and was third in the 400m freestyle.

Cyprianos took gold in the 200m, 400m, 1500m freestyle events, 50m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 100m and 200m backstroke, 400m individual medley and 200m breaststro­ke while coming second in the 100m freestyle among other races he took part in.

Mashonalan­d retained the aggregate trophy of the 2017 National Swimming Championsh­ips held at the City Pool. Mashonalan­d dominated both the boys’ and girls’ swimming events to amass 2 957 points, while hosts Matabelela­nd were second with 2 074 points. Mashonalan­d Country Districts were a distant third with 190 points.

The four-day swimming gala saw Mashonalan­d, Matabelela­nd, Mashonalan­d Country Districts, Midlands and Manicaland taking part.
