Byo water problems need urgent attention

-

THE city of Bulawayo and the entire Matabeleland region have been experiencing water shortages for years now and as a region we really don’t know when these water problems will end.

We have been told that there are plans to bring water to Bulawayo and the region through what was known as the Matabeleland-Zambezi Water Project which later changed the name to Matabeleland Water Trust but to my surprise there is nothing which came out of that arrangement and we are now appealing to the responsible ministry to revive that water project to construct the pipeline from Zambezi to Matabeleland and Bulawayo to uplift the standards of the people.

This means that if work on the Zambezi Water Project is revived it means many farmers will now be able to produce their crops any time of the year since they will now be using irrigation.

We once heard about the so called green belt all the way to Bulawayo but we don’t know where it all ended.

That pipeline from the Zambezi River can also contribute towards the development of Lupane into a big town since the centre will also benefit from the Zambezi water project. I’m surprised to hear that the project was proposed back in 1933 but up to now there is no sign that shows the project can start any time soon.

I therefore appeal to the Government department responsible lands and water development to look for donors who can fund the project.

A number of companies ended up relocating to other urban centres as a result of water shortages in Bulawayo.
