Falcon College camp for Sables
ZIMBABWE national rugby fifteens coach, Peter de Villiers will get an opportunity to have a look at players for the 2019 Rugby World Cup qualifiers when the Sables hold a training camp at Falcon College in Esigodini from Friday.
A squad of 40 players has been called for the camp which runs from 4 to 7 May. Kisset Chirengende, the Sables team manager said the number of players could increase with more being called up.
The Sables are scheduled to tour South Africa from 20 to 31 May to play against yet to be named opponents in the neighbouring country.
“We have a camp from 4 to 7 May at Falcon College, 40 players have been called up so far but more could be added. There is a plan for a tour to South Africa from 20-31 May, who we are playing there is not yet decided,’’ Chirengende said.
e Sables are preparing for the Rugby Africa Gold Cup which runs from June to August. Zimbabwe will play against Morocco, Kenya, Tunisia, Uganda and Namibia.
The country on top of the six-team log will automatically qualify for the 2019 Rugby World Cup while those in second place also stand a chance to head to Japan via the repêchage.
Last week, local mining giants Zerttew Resources unveiled a $1 million sponsorship to become the main bankrollers for the Sables.
Meanwhile, there have been changes to the coaches coming for the AMG Global Junior Rugby Coaching Festival at Falcon College from 3 to 6 May. Festival director Orlando Fernandes said Joe Beukes and Rob Kempson have dropped out with the duo replaced by Norman Jordan as well as Delarey du Preez.
Primary schools attending the festival are Highlands, Whitestone, Petra, Gateway, Barwick and Wise Owl.
Under-14 teams taking part are from Christian Brothers College, Lomagundi, Midlands Christian College, Falcon College, Wise Owl, Hillcrest, Churchill, Northlea and Western Suburbs Select. Only three first teams are part of the festival, these being Falcon College, CBC and Lomagundi.
Besides AMG Global, Zimbabwe Lithium, PPC Cement, Associated Tyres, Fuchs, Tesa Fencing and Flo Petroleum are the other bankrollers of the festival.
