Kenyan President, Foreign missions condemn Zanu-PF attack

KENYAN President Uhuru Kenyatta led a list of high profile individual­s in condemning the violent attack at the Zanu-PF rally yesterday at White City Stadium in Bulawayo.

The explosion which came just as President Mnangagwa and his two deputies Cde Kembo Mohadi and General Dr Constantin­o Chiwenga were leaving the VVIP tent saw a number of officials being rushed to different hospitals for treatment. President Mnangagwa escaped unhurt. Writing in his official twitter account, @UKenyatta, President Kenyatta said political competitio­n should not be allowed to fracture the country.

“As a long-standing friend of Zimbabwe, Kenya sends its message of goodwill to President Mnangagwa and the people of the Republic of Zimbabwe. Political competitio­n should not fracture Zimbabwean­s but should be a measure to deepen their democratic credential­s,” wrote President Kenyatta.

Also sending solidarity messages were various foreign missions based in the country such as the US, UK, EU and the Swedish embassies. Writing on their official twitter handle @usembassyh­arare, the embassy said the attack was unacceptab­le.

“We condemn the attack at the Zanu-PF rally in Bulawayo this afternoon. Political violence in any form is unacceptab­le and contrary to the positive progress required to move Zimbabwe forward as it seeks to take its place on the global stage. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families,” said the embassy.

Also sending their messages of console to President Mnangagwa and the ruling party were leaders of the opposition parties in the country including MDC Alliance leader, Mr Nelson Chamisa and leader of the Rainbow Coalition Dr Joice Mujuru.

“Terrible events at White City Stadium. Our prayers go out to the injured and we hope no lives have been lost. Violence must have no place in our politics. May God bless and protect the country we all love,” wrote Mr Chamisa on his twitter account, @nelsoncham­isa.
