Race keeps memory of George Silundika alive

-

BLACK nationalist and panAfricanism movement leader, Jamaican Marcus Mosiah Garvey aptly captured the need for a people to be aware of their history when he said: “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots”.

The statement will be ringing in Zimbabwe as the country celebrates Heroes Day tomorrow (Monday) commemorating the luminaries and general populace that played a critical role in liberating the country from colonial rule.

While the whole country will be partaking in various activities to remember our Heroes, Plumtree last month held a 10km run in honour of Tarcisius Malan George Silundika, one of the leaders of Zimbabwe’s fight against white minority rule.

Silundika is interred at the Heroes Acre and was a minister and a member of Zapu Central Committee at the time of his death in April 1981.

The TG Silundika Cultural Community Centre (TGCCC) 10km Run was held on 7 July at Gala Village in Bulilima District.

The race is part of activities around the centre which was created at Silundika’s homestead as a way to keep alive his memory by his family.

The Centre is located at Gala Village under Chief Gampu and houses an art gallery and performing arts centre.

This year’s race was the third edition of the event and attracted hundreds of runners from Bulilima District.
