Marijuana beer hits market

Sunday News (Zimbabwe) - - Front Page -

SOUTH Africa has got its first taste of cannabis beer, thanks to a Durban brewery called Poison City.

Last month, the Constitutional Court of South Africa, headed by Deputy Chief Justice, Raymond Zondo, decriminalised the private personal use of marijuana. This ground-breaking verdict left many South Africans on a high, optimistic about the possibilities of future financial endeavours.

And while the sale of marijuana is still wholly prohibited by law, South African companies are identifying ingenuitive ways of incorporating the ‘‘herb’’ into marketing ploys and products.

Poison City Brewing, a Durban-based craft brewery, jumped at the opportunity to infuse their liquor with cannabis, resulting in the creation of the Cannabis IPA (India Pale Ale) and the Durban Poison Cannabis lager. The perfectly timed launch of both these beers coincides with the Constitutional Court ruling.

According to Dispatch Live, Poison City Brewing has received funding from a number of well-known Durban-based investors‚ including RCL Foods CEO Miles Dally and Spar CEO Graham O’Connor.

The Poison City Cannabis IPA is described as being a balanced American-style ale with powerful aromas and flavours. According to the brewery’s website, this hemp-infused beer has the flavour of Cannabis Sativa which complements the taste of hops.

Like the IPA, the recently released Durban Poison Cannabis Lager contains no THC — so, no, drinking this beer won’t get you high. But according to the company’s co-owner‚ Andre Schubert, the beer will still make you feel happy, thanks to its unique crisp flavour.

Durban Poison Brewing supplies Spar liquor outlets, Tops, in major cities like Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth. The beer is harder to find in Cape Town, with Liquor City in Claremont being listed as one of the few stockists. Schubert confirmed that the beer was released nationwide in September, and is available for consumption nationwide. — the
