Seven Tuskers juniors in Zim Under-14 squad

SEVEN Tuskers youngsters were chosen for the Zimbabwe Under-14 national cricket team which is heading off to Pretoria, South Africa at the beginning of December.

The national trials were held at Saint George’s College over two days last Friday and Saturday where the national selectors for the Under-14 age group chose 13 boys in the travelling squad and four were put on standby.

Recently retired former Chevrons skipper Hamilton Masakadza was at the trials to give inspiratio­n to the youngsters as they tried to impress the selectors.

Former Zimbabwe bowler David Mutendera is the coach of the national Under-14 team that is heading off to the neighbouri­ng country for the annual

Cricket South Africa Week.

Six of the Tuskers youngsters are part of the 13 man travelling squad while one is a non travelling reserve. Of the seven, five are from Falcon College, one is at Petra College Junior while the other learns at Mtshingwe Primary School.

Falcon College had Isaac Phiri, Benjamin Williams, Dylan Nzvenga and Nathaniel Hlabangana chosen in the travelling squad while Lwandile Chitofu is one of those on standby.

Liam Mudenda of Petra College Junior, who only turns 12 early next month made the team together with Sean Dzakatira of Mtshingwe.

Mudenda, a brilliant up-and-coming batsman continued with his fine form with the bat days after he made the national team when he scored 167 for Petra in a Twenty20 schools fixture against Masiyepham­bili Junior last Wednesday.
