Messi surpasses Ronaldo Champions League goalscoring record

-

Another night, another milestone for Barcelona star Lionel Messi after scoring in the routine 3-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund last Wednesday night.

Spain’s Barcelona sealed top spot in Group F and their progression to the Eufa Champions League round of 16 with Messi starring at the Nou Camp - scoring their second while also setting up both Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann .

And with his only goal of the game in Barcelona, Messi set a record by scoring against his 34th opponent in Europe’s top competition.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner and Argentina captain was level on 33 with fellow iconic rival Portugal icon Cristiano Ronaldo before Wednesday night’s action.

Meanwhile, Karim Benzema (Real Madrid) sits five further back of Messi on 29, while Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (now based in America) have both scored against 25 different opponents.

Robert Lewandowski, Sergio Aguero, Didier Drogba, Arjen

Robben and Samuel Eto’o make up the rest of the top 10. Ernesto Valverde’s side showed signs of their best attacking football against Dortmund, with the front three all getting on the scoresheet.

And they will be desperate to continue from where they left off when they take on Atletico Madrid away in La Liga on Sunday night. The Catalan giants currently sit top of La Liga on goal difference ahead of Real Madrid, while Atletico are three points further back in fourth. –DailyMail.co.uk
