ZACC probe on City of Harare commendable

- Joshua Magadza, Harare.

EDITOR — The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) is right to investigate the irregular land sales involving serving Harare City councillors and those who served under former mayor Mr Muchadeyi Masunda.

There is an encouraging voice against corruption that has been adopted by Zimbabweans.

If we continue in that spirit there will be no room for corruption in Zimbabwe, corrupt activities should be dealt with.

Investigators should request a list of all serving councillors and those who have left as well as copies of lease agreements on City of Harare properties so that they carry out their investigations properly.

The probe should also cover the current crop of councillors who have been implicated in cases of graft.

No councillor should be given special benefits, given the fact that they have not been doing what their roles entail.

Councillors are the servants of ratepayers and must always prioritise the needs of residents which are mainly basic services like clean water and pothole-free roads.

The Harare city council has been getting money from ratepayers while it is failing to keep the city clean.

Like the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing said, no councillor should receive special benefits; councillors are abusing their office and their high sounding talk has amounted to nothing tangible.

We do not condone corruption and we hope ZACC will arrest all those found engaging in corrupt activities.

A corruption-free country can take a developmental route and be able to improve social and economic services.

It’s all about basics people should work to improve service delivery.
