Zimbabwean girls pushing boundaries

- Hannah Khumalo, Harare.

EDITOR — Advanced Level results have justified the cries of various sections of society to afford girls the same opportunities as boys in academics.

Over the past few years, girls have been outshining boys in the Advanced Level Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec).

According to an analysis by Zimsec, female candidates scored 91,6 percent, with their counterparts managing 86,4 percent. Gone are the days where boys used to outshine girls; the tables have turned and the girls are raising women’s flag high.

According to the Zimsec board chairman Professor Levi Nyagura, there were more male candidates than females in last year’s examinations.

The girls are worth celebrating cognisant of the fact that they are the creamed candidates after the Ordinary Level examinations.

With education, skill and the right support, girls are proving to be a force to reckon with in various fraternities, education included. Zimbabwe has been ranked among top countries with a high literacy rate and we are proud of the girls who have been doing so well despite gender stereotypes in our communities.

Girls have proven that they can also do what the boys can do; they have shown that they are academically gifted the same way boys are.

Well done girls. Keep up the good work!
