Yesterday saw the première of “XXX: Return of Xander Cage” at all Ster Kinekor theatres and what a movie.
I had a chance to watch the movie and I can say that the movie is exactly what the first movie should have been fifteen years ago.
While Xander Cage turns out to be among the least interesting characters in this spectacular ensemble, the colourful and eclectic supporting cast and the creative action beats make this return to the Xander Zone a trip worth taking.
The plot kicks off with a gloriously Samuel L. Jackson monologue before moving to a dynamite action sequence, whereby Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa do that thing they do so well (the jumping and the kicking and the shooting and the flipping) which kicks the plot into gear.
Ironically, the biggest flaw of this goof-off extravaganza is Vin Diesel himself.
We get the same trade-off as the “Fast and Furious” movies, in which you get more than a few prominent and or quirky female characters (Ruby Rose gets a lively introduction, and Toni Collette is having a blast) even as we’re fully locked in “male gaze” mode throughout.
But when the focus is on the ensemble cast interacting with each other or on the action, XXX is firing on all cylinders.
I shall not waste much time but leave it to you watch and learn.
So yes, “XXX: Return of Xander Cage” is exactly what you want it to be.
The film looks scrumptious, with much of the action taking place outside and in various overseas locations.

The 19-year-old accentuated her big brown eyes with smoky eye makeup in the snap and painted her artificially -plumbed lips with a light pink shade.
“New Day”, Kylie wrote in the caption for her more than 84 million followers on Instagram.
The “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” also took to Snapchat and posted videos of new items from her wildly popular Kylie Cosmetics line including a Valentine’s Day collection.
Kylie also gave fans a “car tour” that she previously promised on social media.
She posted videos on Snapchat of a black Rolls-Royce that she dubbed Black Angel in one clip showing the iconic hood ornament.
Kylie also shared videos of the luxury vehicle’s black and blue interior.
She also included video of a tire and rim on the Rolls-Royce.
Kylie then treated her followers to a tour of her sleek Mercedes-Benz Maybach sedan.
She wrote “Maybachhhh” in the caption of a clip showing a front tire and rim and the car’s V12 insignia.
Kylie also provided a close-up of the V12 engine designation.
The makeup mogul also showed the hot pink interior of the car.
According to dailymail.com, she posted a final video on Snapchat of just a black screen with text reading: “That’s all gotta save the rest of the goods”.
