GATOOMA, 27 March 1942. — Gatooma is to have a Farmers’ Co-op. This was decided at a meeting of the Gatooma Farmers’ and Stockowners’ Association held in the Magistrate Court last Friday, when there was a record attendance.
Mr C M Davenport, President of the Association, presided and Mr J Corry, Chief Dairy Officer, was present.
Mr A L Reynolds suggested a scheme which would run concurrently with a Farmers’ Co-op, namely, a milk cooling and pasteurising plant.
He estimated the total cost at £1 000, and the running cost at £70 a month. The Government, he thought, would assist, but would require full information. Basing his calculations on 200 gallons a day, one penny could put aside for repayment of initial cost, £25 per month, which would defray the cost in there years, and the plant become the property of the producers.
Mr Cory said the scheme would have his full support. Something should be done immediately so that surplus milk could be send elsewhere where it was required.
