Chunga to step down
MOSES “Bambo” Chunga says he will be stepping down as the president of the Soccer Coaches Union of Zimbabwe when his four-year term expires at the end of this month.
Chunga said he was passing on the baton to another coach with fresh ideas.
During his tenure, the union managed to secure a cheaper funeral policy for coaches.
The union also lobbied successfully for ZIFA to reduce fees for coaching fees such as the CAF A licence.
Chunga said it was sad that he was leaving when the profession of coaches was still failing to attract the respect it deserves.
“We should be guided by a code of con- duct, but some of the things which are happening in the fraternity leave a lot to be desired.
“We need to be guided by rules and regulations, but at the moment I can safely say that football has gone to the dogs,” he said.
However, the Zimbabwe football legend said the coaches should take the blame. “We are too desperate,’’ he said. “At times you see coaches settling for less and even assisting these stakeholders to abuse us.
“We undermine ourselves most of the times. And as a leader, sometimes, it not easy to come in between the coach and his club. But I feel that I have done my part and someone with other ideas should take over.
“It has always been difficult to work with football stakeholders. They have not really been forthcoming.
“We understand that people need results, but there is also need to respect the trade.’’
ZSCA, which is membership-driven, are also failing to realise their full potential as most of the members were not up to date with their subscriptions.
Chunga is still unattached after his contract with Harare City was not renewed when it ended last December.
The former Warriors captain said when he takes up his next coaching assignment he would be more careful.
“My job is to coach and football is my life.
“But I have realised that there are some of the clubs that I cannot work under. So the next time when I am approached I will be careful and very selective,” he said.
