HARTLEY, 25 May 1917. — Hartley continues to do its best for the war funds. A dance will be held and the proceeds of which will be handed to the YMCA Soldiers’ Institute at Durban.

The work done by this institution is wonderful, and we have received from a Hartley member of the 2nd RR a most impressive description of how the soldiers are cared for when in Durban.

We have had a long spell, nearly a mount-off dry weather and mealie growers are getting depressed. There are now signs of a breakup of the drought, and with normal February rains we may still hope for good crops.

Mining matters in the district are not too bright. Several properties have closed down, and there are rumours of others following the example. It is, however, hopeful to note signs of a revival in the direction of Old Hartley.
