Drags fun day at Donnybrook

- Collin Matiza Sports Editor

TOMORROW promises to be another fun-filled day for the local motor racing enthusiasts when they once again throng the home of local motorsport - Donnybrook Raceway in Harare to watch the second event of the 2017 hp lubes/Castrol Drag Racing Series.

This popular motor-sport discipline of drag racing provides members of the public with a safe, legal, controlled environment in which to drag race their vehicles away from city streets or back-country roads.

Anyone with a driver’s licence can compete, providing their vehicle or motorcycle passes a simple technical inspection.

The event attracts a varied competitor field, from mothers to grandparents and seasoned motor-sport racers, participating in everything from Toyota Corollas to V8 NOS powered Cobras.

The event usually attracts between 70 and 90 competitors and both officials and seasoned competitors are always on hand to help newcomers with instruction and advice.

At tomorrow’s event the Sables Dragpro Club, who run this exciting motor racing sport in Zimbabwe, are expecting a couple of competitors from Bulawayo in addition to the now well-known Terry Allberry, and the Club extends a warm welcome to these visitors.

With Alan Cacace’s AC Cobra out of action for the time being as it undergoes engine work, competition will be intense between Allberry, in his AC Cobra, and Mano Zevgolis, in his hp lubes/Castrol Toyota MR2.

The MR2 has, since the last event, undergone further development and tomorrow will tell whether this vehicle has been pushed to breaking point or whether it has more to offer.

Allberry will as usual be pushing hard to swing the odds back in his favour.

Angelo Pereira has been leading the motorcycle field and is expected to retain the top spot, but with several new riders coming onto the Drag Racing scene this year, anything is possible on the day.

In response to competitor requests, tomorrow’s event sees the introduction of a new Class specifically for Quad Bikes and it is hoped this will be well supported.

This addition brings the total number of classes to 14.

With 10 motor vehicle classes, three motorcycle classes and one quad bike class, there is a class for every type of competitor.

Prizes and trophies are awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd-placed competitor in every class and trophies are awarded to the Top Eliminator Motor vehicle and Top Eliminator Motorcycle of the day respectively.

The 2017 Drag Racing Series is proudly supported by hp lubes/Castrol, Bulldog, Financial Gazette, Turbo Solutions Africa and the AAZ.

And the Sables Dragpro are delighted to have recently welcomed The Automobile Association of Zimbabwe as a new partner of the 2017 Drag Racing Series .

◆ Racing starts at 10am.
