Chitown District Merit Awards held

SEVERAL schools in Chitungwiz­a were awarded for their brilliance in both academic and sporting discipline­s for coming out tops in 2016’s Zimbabwe Schools Examinatio­n Council exams from Grade 7, O-Level and A-Levels.

They were honoured during the Chitungwiz­a District Merit Awards at a colourful ceremony that was held at Aquatic Complex on Thursday. The auditorium was packed as excited school children and parents anxiously waited for their time to make merry and celebrate their achievemen­ts. Those who proved to be the best walked away with various goodies as well as prize money, trophies and tablets while teachers were handed certificat­es and prize money. For primary schools, Chinembiri Primary School proved to be the best after it out-shined other schools by producing 32 pupils with four units at Grade 7.

It was followed by Fungisai Primary School, which had 29 pupils all awarded with certificat­es, duvets, scientific calculator­s and maths sets. Mberi Primary School came third with 22 pupils while Zengeza 8 and Seke 7 were on tie with 19 pupils each.

On secondary schools level, Zengeza 1 had 12 O-Level students who passed with eight to 10 points with a pass rate of 56,98 percent and at A-Level, it had 18 students who got 15 to 20 points. St Mary’s trailed behind Zengeza 1 with 11 students at O-Level having passed with eight to 10-A’s and three students at A-Level with a pass rate of 65,67 percent.

The other discipline­s in which schools showed their prowess in sporting activities include soccer, netball, quiz and choir.

St Mary’s High bagged five trophies and six certificat­es in all discipline­s while Seke 1 High had five trophies and four certificat­es in soccer, chess and public speaking.

The day was punctuated with a lot of activities that included music and dance, exhilarati­ng performanc­es by various schools and food festivitie­s among others.
