Govt must act to stop accidents

-

EDITOR — The story headlined “11 burnt beyond recognition in road crash refers.”

Government needs to act as soon as possible on the issue of road traffic accidents because it is getting out of hand.

Lives are being lost daily on our roads. This is not the first time we are losing innocent lives as a result of human error.

The Nissan Caravan is said to have been carrying 21 passengers when tragedy struck, which is absurd. How can a vehicle which is supposed to accommodate only 18 people have three extra individuals? It is clear the vehicle was overloaded. I can imagine how packed they were, worse still speeding with that kind of load.

There is need for a vehicle users’ indaba to enlighten drivers on the importance of driving with caution and avoiding human error.

Councils should also see to it that damaged roads are repaired because they may somehow contribute. The Zimbabwe Republic Police must enforce and ensure that road rules and regulations are followed.

Thumbs up to the herdboy who managed to offer first aid to the victims.

Additionally, police should reward him for the bravery he showed, because without him the casualties could have been worse.

The nation of Zimbabwe has to join hands in making sure that lives are saved by complying with road rules and driving with extreme caution. Public transport drivers should bear in mind that they might be carrying another family’s breadwinner. There is also need for our emergency services to respond quickly when accidents occur.
