- Takudzwa Chitsiga Sports Reporter

ROYAL Harare top amateur golfer Tonderai Masunga finally remembered how to win at the Midlands Amateur Championship at Kwekwe Golf Club at the weekend.

Masunga, who is playing off zero handicap, was in fine form as he saw off 24 other top players who graced the event.

The former Wingate Park Golf Club member is under the wings of Mike Baylis and had finished second to Zimbabwe’ top ranked golfer David Amm at the Manicaland Amateur Championships at Hillside in Mutare a fortnight ago.

Masunga had good rounds of 71, 79, 76 and 71 to clinch his first title of the 2017 Zimbabwe Golf Association season.

Top amateur players are in the race to qualify for the All-Africa Team Championships at the Victoria Falls Elephant Hills Golf resort in October and the Midlands Amateur contributes points for qualifying.

Promise Sumburero was the runner-up in the event. Sumburero plays off six handicap and had rounds of 76, 72, 76 and 71.

Tatenda Makunde was third after carding 76, 76, 76 and 76.

Promising amateur Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa finished fourth playing off his two handicap.

Kwekwe players failed to come to terms with their home conditions with Cosmas Siyakobo being the best placed in sixth place.

Alois Phiri, Godfrey Zulu of Roland Park in Zvishavane and Kwekwe’s Ben Mashangu completed the top ten.

Several top amateurs did not grace the occasion, but are expected to be part of this weekend’s Harare Amateur Championship set for Wingate.

The event will be held from Friday.
