Command Agriculture expansion commendable

EDITOR — Government is making impressive efforts in trying to boost our economy and it is attracting positive responses.

Command Agriculture has been making headlines in the media as the country made surplus maize production for the first time in a long time.

We were at risk of losing our grains because of the excessive rains experienced this year but that did not turn out to be a dilemma after all.

The idea of Government expanding its efforts to other agricultural crops in Zimbabwe is the best thing that can happen to the farmers and the nation at large.

We have seen that foreign countries are even chipping in now because they trust that something tangible will come out of this. Spain recently donated equipment to make everything else achievable.

It is really good that farmers are responding positively in registering for soya bean production.

Both private and public partners are involved in this development so this gives the nation hope.

Soya beans are of high importance as they are rich in nutrition and are raw materials to some of the basic commodities like cooking oil and milk.

Soya bean production had immensely decreased and that cost the country millions of dollars just to import the crop.

This has to be avoided and Zimbabwe should be a self-sustaining country in terms of agriculture.

Our economy is agriculturally based so once we manage to thrive in agriculture, every other sector will do better.
