PPPs the way to go
EDITOR — We can clearly see our Government’s determination on upholding Public Private Partnerships as a strategy to bring about maximum development in our country.
The partnership between Government and Sakunda in a $68 million irrigation project is a great stride by both the public sector and the private sector, and has to be commended.
We have experienced good harvests in this country which can be attributed to the interventions made by the Government in our agricultural sector.
The continued intervention by the Government is even attracting investments in our agricultural sector, hence guaranteeing a boost to our economy since it is agro-based. A strong irrigation system has many advantages over waiting for the rains or manual watering of crops.
Irrigation ensures soil structure and nutrients preservation as there won’t be leaching of nutrients due to water overflow. Unlike other methods of making sure that crops are getting watered, irrigation conserves both water and time.
Specialised drip irrigation prevents diseases and weeds as water will be going straight to the crop or plant giving no chance to germination of weeds as they will not be watered.
With irrigation, one is in total control as they determine not only how much water is distributed but also where it is distributed.
Considering the fact that plants and grass need water to grow and thrive, this investment is ideal and fellow Zimbabweans should chip in and help develop our nation. Faith Nxumalo, Bulawayo.
