Demarco puts up fascinating act

- Tawanda Marwizi Arts Correspondent

TOP Jamaican musician Demarco came on stage relaxed, seemingly unmoved by the fact that his elder in the industry and fellow Jamaican Beenie Man was performing at a venue a few kilometres away.

Demarco performed at Longcheng Plaza, while Beenie Man was at Alexandra Sports Club on the same night.

Demarco, whose real name is Collin Demar Edwar, came on stage to a warm welcome from thousands of music lovers who came for the show.

Fans knew most of his tunes and sang along.

Pundits wrongly predicted that the musician would flop, but according to C&A Promotions that did the show, more than 6 000 tickets were sold.

The musician was energetic and communicated well with the crowd that could not have enough of his hits.

King Cong, as Dermaco is affectionately known, made sure that he left people with sweet memories of a well-delivered act.

Clad in yellow and green, the musician killed it with most of his hit songs that were very familiar with the crowd.

While on stage he showered praises for Zimbabwe thanking the people for their support.

“We have come here to party and I thank you Zimbabwe for supporting me,” he said.

For almost two hours he was on stage, he gave revellers value for their money.

He also acknowledged talent among local musicians that performed.

“Zimbabwe is full of talent I have seen some of them performing here and I was satisfied by their performance,” he said.

The visiting musician made reference to Dobba Don and Kinna who had performed.

Kinna seems to be spreading wings beyond his Mbare recognition.

His songs “Musombo” and “Mudenga Kunge Ndege” were enough to send the crowd into delirium.

The Mbare-bred chanter said these platforms were good for them as they meet with fans from different parts of the country.

Dobba Don also did well when he came for his slot.

The young musician, who has not released a hit song after “Mudendere”, managed to thrill fans.

Some of his songs are still popular with the fans.

Soul Jah Love and Cindy Munyavi were in no-show, with organisers saying they might have been caught up in other gigs elsewhere.

Clint Robinson said it was a good night as the gig attracted thousands of music lovers.

“It was a good show that attracted almost same numbers with Beenie Man. That was also a good platform for the local musicians to prove their prowess,” he said.

Robinson said the energy that Dermaco gave on stage was another lesson for local musicians.
