- Vongai Mbara Arts Reporter

COLOURS, pageantry and dance moves were on full display at the Kuwadzana carnival street party on Sunday.

Hundreds of people including masqueraders from different camps, carnival lovers and officials packed Holland ground then proceeded to Kuwadzana 6 grounds where the main event was held.

The decorated event was hosted by Kuwadzana MP Dr Betty NhambuKaseke and leading the procession was recently appointed Miss Kuwadzana, Michelle Badza alongside her princesses.

A village of performers bowed out in a blaze of colour as they celebrated the different cultures in Zimbabwe.

Amongst participants were Mbare Chimurenga choir, Zvinyau dancers, Zim Asset and Flying Angels.

Some of these groups will also be performing at the national carnival which starts this Friday.

“It is all about celebrating our different cultures. A lot of people in Zimbabwe just hear about carnival but they do not know exactly what it is.

“I have decided to bring the carnival to my constituency so that people in Kuwadzana understand what it is all about.

“I encourage other MPs to introduce these community carnivals in their constituencies so that when we celebrate the national carnival, everyone can participate,” said Dr Kaseke.

As part of the carnival celebrations, there was a star brite moment where talented youngsters showcased to the crowd that had come for the carnival celebrations.

Dancers, singers and poets showed their skills and the winners were given prizes including a holiday at the majestic Victoria Falls.

Entertainment was provided by dancehall stars, Soul Jah Love, Jah Signal, Khadijah and Douglas Chimbetu.

Dr Kaseke commended residents of Kuwadzana for being cooperative.

“I am so blessed to lead such a community. It was very easy to plan this event because everyone was cooperative.

“We worked together as a community and we will continue to do so. I thank everyone who participated in this event,” she said.
