Be short this summer

- Tafadzwa Zimoyo Fashion talk 263

WELCOME to another new month. Glory to God as we draw closer to the end of the year. It is September and we are three months away to 2017 end, good thing we still in summer season.

And September is when flowers begin to blossom, especially the Jacarandas.

It is about colour this season, that is a fact but have you thought of the current trend, the African print.

Some call it “ankra”, “kitenge” or “zambia”.

Many people are now formalising the African print, especially couples who are getting married.

The trend now has gone to men and even visiting Jamaican artiste Bennie Man who two weeks ago had a disappointing show, had his best moment on the fashion statement as he wore an African print suit.

I won’t dwell much on his performance but his choice of wardrobe for the show was top class.

Bennie Man wore an African print, a grey-yellow-brown patterned suit which fitted him well and suited his hairstyle but the stylist missed the point that the event was an evening hence a bit of colour and glitz was expected.

Coming from a dancehall background, seems it must be hard wearing such outfit, but HELLO, if you follow the correct procedure on fashion you won’t go wrong.

The shoulder-chest studded on white shirt added flavour and I must say, for a guy who is not afraid of detail on fashion I salute.

Gone are the days when such scenario, people would start calling names or labelling you wrongly because of such fashion statements, but are you forgetting that we are in the 21st “technotury” (technology –century).

You must understand that what you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language.

So last week, the fashion world witnessed two fashion red carpets, the DSTV Mzansi Viewer’s Choice Awards held in South Africa and the MTV Video Music Awards held in United States.

Yes, that’s a wrap on the award season in the fashion world because those are the summer major one.

To begin with, it was a night of glitz and glam as celebrities attended the prestigious Dstv Mzansi Viewer’s Choice Awards.

Many people were looking forward to the fashion and red-carpet interviews.

They were not disappointed as celebrities put their best fashion foot forward.

Well done to those who slayed and to those still struggling, we say, Rome wasn’t built in a day continue trying.

So Carnival is here and today marks its climax.

There is going to be a fashion show courtesy of local designers, can’t wait to see where and which part of Zimbabwe will be marketed in terms of fashion, as they had said it is about different cultures.

Don’t forget about the Samba and Cuban girls and their different outfits.

Anyway this week my focus is on shorts since we are now in summer.

Shorts are a staple piece for any girl during these hot summer months. They’re super easy to throw on when you run out to do errands. We are bombarded with so many different options it’s hard to figure out where to even start!

To help you on your way, here are short essentials to get you through all of your fab summer events courtesy of Sarah Fibbs.

The Denim Short

This is such a classic denim short. The colour is such a perfect blue, is flattering, and will go with anything. I love the length of these also — it allows you to adjust how long or short you want them. Play with the length by ordering a size up, as this will allow you to get your roll on (rolling the cuff, that is). Wear dressed up or down — this short allows you so many options you’ll find yourself going back to these more often than not this summer (and for years to come). The Coloured Denim Short

Denim shorts don’t have to be blue! Invest in a pair of denim shorts in a different hue — pink, yellow, purple, green — whatever strikes your fancy.

Style them how you would your normal everyday denim shorts or take it up a notch experimenting with colour blocking. Try pairing with a blazer for a dressier option. Have fun with colour this summer!

The Printed Short

I absolutely LOVE this pair. This short is flowy and light and the print is fab and will easily add some colour and edge to your look. Plus, I’m a huge fan of the scalloped hem — you can find plenty of scalloped options this summer — it’s very feminine and chic. Pair with a simple top or take a risk and mix with other colours and prints.

This short is all about fun so let loose and have fun styling it! Pair with a great wedge sandal or a cute pair of flats (I’m thinking metallic here).

The Dress Short

This is a great night-time option — simple, yet sexy in a flowing black fabric, not too long and not too short. Pair this with a sexy sheer top or great tee, throw a blazer over and pair with a great heel and you’ll be ready for a night out on the town. Also wear these dressed down with flats and a casual button down.

The Bermuda/Boyfriend

Sometimes you’re just not in the mood to show off your gams, which is why Bermuda/boyfriend styles are a great option to have in your closet. You’ll be a little more covered up without suffering through the heat. Pair with a great t-shirt and an awesome pair of sandals for a super cool, super fab look.

So have fun this summer with your short options.

We have a few more months of heat ahead of us and investing in a few new short options will keep you looking fresh and summer ready.

Next week I will be with the gents.
