HARARE, 13 September 1992. — The Government has released an undisclosed substantial amount of money to the Livestock Committee to build feeding-pens in communal areas as part of its plans to save up to 170 000 cattle in drought-stricken areas.
The Deputy Director of the Department of Veterinary Services, Dr Welbourne Madzima, who is co-ordinator of the programme, said yesterday in Harare that they were now procuring building material for the pens.
Each pen will cater for 1 000 head on a survival ration.
Although Dr Madzima did not reveal the number of pens to be constructed under the first phase, he said enough pens would be built to cater for cattle for cattle during the critical months of October, November and December when pastures would be completely depleted.
