Residents must use water sparingly, pay bills

-

EDITOR — Water is one of the most important resources on earth. Plants and animals need water to survive. With the human body consisting 75 percent water and the world made up of 35 percent water, it means without water there is no life.

Apart from drinking it to survive, people have many other uses for clean water like cooking, bathing and washing.

Residents of Harare have lamented the poor water supplies which have resulted in outbreaks of diseases like cholera and typhoid.

The City of Harare has been asking residents to pay water bills yet they do not supply the water regularly. Questions are being asked over the logic of paying bills and their use vis-a-vis improved service delivery to residents.

It is disheartening for the residents to continuously carry loads of water that is not safe for drinking from distant boreholes and wells, after paying their bills in full.

Harare City Council claims that there are companies that owe them, but forget that there are individuals and companies that are very compliant yet are suffering because of other deviant citizens. This is unfair.

The debt collectors whom council engaged should be strict and committed to ensure that all those in arrears pay their dues for the improvement of services to residents.

However, people also need to use water sparingly because of water shortages being experienced due to demand exceeding supply. Ronald Kamutereko, Mabvuku.
