Farmers urged to prepare adequately

- Walter Nyamukondiwa Chinhoyi Bureau

FARMERS have been called upon to prepare adequately for the coming season to surpass milestones achieved in the past.

Mashonaland West Minister of State Cde Faber Chidarikire said the province should play its part as one of the major grain producing area.

He was speaking at the commemoration of Mental Health Day at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital on Monday.

“We want to urge the people to focus on the coming season as we want to keep our nation well fed,” said Minister Chidarikire. “A well fed nation is a health nation.

The country has now surpassed one million tonnes of maize on the back of success of government’s Command Agriculture and the Presidential Inputs Support Scheme.

“We would like to thank the people for a successful farming season and a bumper harvest,” said Minister Chidarikire.

“This is a sign of unity in implementing government’s Command Agriculture programme and the Presidential Inputs Scheme. This same spirit should continue as we get into the summer season. We want the silos to overflow.”

Silos in Mashonaland West are full and grain is now being moved to other provinces to create space for grain that is yet to be delivered.

The province has more than doubled the hectarage under wheat.
