Public awareness on summer diseases critical

- Dr Tafadzwa Muchena, Via e-mail.

EDITOR — Cases of disease outbreaks tend to escalate as we enter a new season when we experience high temperatures.

Seventeen cases of typhoid have been reported at Matapi Flats in Mbare. It should be noted that the reason for the outbreak of diseases is summer. Hot weather creates favourable conditions for bacteria, viruses and other parasites to thrive.

Food poisoning cases during summer are widespread due to the consumption of contaminated food and water which leads to stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea or vomiting.

People must realise that if on a hot summer day you experience a headache, you vomit or experience breathing problems, chances are high that you may suffer from a heart stroke.

Many people have reportedly collapsed in town because of excessive heat.

Try and avoid doing activities in the open during peak sun hours. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and crowded spaces, increase water or liquid intake to prevent dehydration.

Those with disposable incomes can make use of sunscreen with a higher SPF to prevent skin damage.

People must avoid roadside food or contaminated water; increase the consumption of fruits and vegetable and wear wide-brimmed hats to avoid direct exposure to sunlight.

Lastly people should wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing. Dark colours absorb heat.

Summer is a beautiful time to enjoy vacations and spend time with family, friends and making memories only if you are healthy. All that you need to do to stay fit is a little awareness and few precautions to enjoy the good times.
