Internal control systems critical

-

EDITOR — Corruption has for years drained Government departments of millions of dollars due to the absence of control systems to help track the movement of funds in certain branches.

Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko said Government needed to introduce internal control systems to help curb revenue leakages and smuggling.

It has been noted that many institutions fail to fulfil their goals and missions due to lack of adequate internal control and requisite knowledge to institute rigorous internal control.

There is need for serious examination of all internal systems and a review of outdated internal control as people are getting more sophisticated due to technological advancement.

It was important to curb cyber crime and to our advantage we now have the Ministry of Cyber Security and Threat Detection and Mitigation.

Many people use technology to their advantage in order to manipulate people and stripping them off their valuables.

The most critical area where we need to tighten security is at our border posts.

Illegal activities such as smuggling of goods have become rampant as there is loss of revenue with officials accepting bribes.

Having internal control systems help improve the “control environment” of the organisation and make the organisation process-dependent instead of person-dependent

It identifies redundancies in operational and control procedures and provides recommendations to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of procedures.

Moreover, it ultimately increases accountability within the organisation.
