Drag racing grand finale set for D/brook

- Collin Matiza Sports Editor

THOUSANDS of local motor racing enthusiasts are once again expected to congregate at the cathedral of local motorsport - Donnybrook Raceway in Harare - this coming Sunday to watch the Grand Finale of the 2017hp lubes Castrol Drag Racing Series.

And competitors and motor racing fans will not want to miss the opportunity of attending the final event of the year before the customary long rainy season break.

As it is the last event of the year, competitors will be pushing their vehicles to the limit in a sport where competition is fierce, passion for cars is intense and any member of the public can take part.

“There is no excuse for racing on the streets when members of the public can attend these public drag racing events and push the pedal to the metal in a sanctioned environment,” said Mano Zevgolis of the Sables Dragpro Club, who run drag racing in this country, yesterday.

In fact, drag racing events continue to provide the perfect opportunity for motor racing enthusiasts to enjoy a day of entertainment with friends and family, either as competitors, spectators, or as a networking and socialising opportunity.

Zevgolis, in his hp lubes Castrol Toyota MR2, remains undefeated going into this event on Sunday and he is determined to hang onto his title and quarter mile record.

Always wanting to push the limits, Zevgolis has indicated that his goal for Sunday is to better his previous record of 10,63 seconds and he is prepared to push his vehicle to potentially breaking point to achieve this.

Initial enquiries indicate that his hp lubes/Castrol Toyota MR2 MK1 could already have broken the world record for the quarter mile in this type of vehicle and confirmation of this is expected soon from the relevant sporting bodies.

On the tail of the MR2, however, are the two AC V8 Cobras and the purpose-built Chevy Chevair.

Terry Allberry from Bulawayo will be driving his mint AC Cobra and his guest, Gareth, will also be attending from Bulawayo to drive the Chevair.

Alan Cacace will also be taking part in his very popular AC Cobra.

These four vehicles make for some fierce competition and fantastic action.

Calstain Sibanda, who has been working tirelessly on his twin turbo Mercedes V8, may now be a new threat to several top competitors with several changes having been made to his car!

In the bike classes, the Carlsson brothers Les and Darryl; and Angelo Perreira remain at the top of the game and competition amongst these riders is just as intense as within the vehicle classes.

Les Carlsson currently holds the title of fastest bike on his Suzuki GSXR1000 with an outstanding 9,9 second run.
