Recycling creates jobs, cleaner cities

-

EDITOR - Planning the waste management and recycling of all the rubbish produced in this country is a huge task.

This requires logistical planning, scientific knowledge and understanding in order to balance the impact on the environment and the cost effectiveness of the process.

Recently Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs Cde Mandi Chimene urged Mutare City Council to construct a recycling plant at its dumpsite and improve waste management in the city.

It is obvious waste management and recycling companies are also feeling extra pressure to perform their role in the greenest ways possible because of the rising amount of garbage.

It is important to remember that Zimbabwe’s resources and landfill sites are limited and this has a major bearing on the kind of activities that are carried out.

To ease the pressure on Government agencies, numerous privately managed organisations also need to play a part in waste management and recycling programmes. In many cities it means that local government agencies have been left with the responsibility of overseeing the work done by these private organisations.

If waste is properly managed there will be job creation as people will earn a livelihood from waste recycling. The private sector will benefit too.

Thumbs-up to this initiative, let’s make our cities classy and attractive.
