Curbing our desires

-

MARK 4 vs 19 (NIV)

“. . . but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.”

Desire is an emotion that we all have, this thing that is in us that attracts us to certain things, some more than others. We are all driven by desire, it motivates us, and it pushes us. Many of us seek to be defined and identified by the things they own.

Unbridled desire can be a curse rather than a blessing; it will propel us to acquire at whatever cost, regardless of whether we hurt, maim or injure others in the process. This one emotion forces many of us to steal, hurt, destroy and cause untold sorrow, all because we desire to have.

A story is told in the Bible about King Ahab who desired a vineyard that was next to his palace. Broken at the refusal of the owner to sell this piece of land to him, he went home sullen and sad. When his wife asked him why he was sad, he revealed that it was because he had been denied what he desired.

She soon hatched a plan to falsely accuse Naboth of blasphemy. Aided by the nobles, King Ahab succeeded in ensuring that Naboth was put to death and the plot of land was given to him. Likewise, we sometimes behave like Jezebel, we will chase our desires at any cost, even if it means straining our relations with GOD. REFLECTIONS OF A WORK IN PROGRESS ...
