Brothers in the dock for assaulting cop
TWO brothers in Chitungwiza, who allegedly assaulted a police officer for trying to arrest their mother and several other people over stands, appeared in court last Friday.
The brothers allegedly assaulted people over stands in co-operatives belonging to suspended councillor Kalisto Masango and his rival Chitungwiza South legislator Christopher Chigumba.
Never (29) and his younger brother Lovemore Zhuwawu (27) of 28446 Unit L Extension appeared in court before Chitungwiza magistrate Ms Blessing Murwisi and denied all 11 charges involving assault, malicious damage to property and driving without a licence.
Ms Murwisi remanded them in custody to today for bail ruling.
Prosecutor Mr Edmond Ndambakuwa told the court that the complainant, Nomore Tumai, a police officer (rank not specified) of Glen Norah B stationed at Chitungwiza Police Station (Investigation Department), went to Chigumba area in Unit L Extension on November 6 at around 9.20am on duty.
It is reported that Tumai was with his workmate when he went to locate the duo’s mother, Letwin Chinenge, and Jester Madzivadondo, with the intention to take them to Chitungwiza Magistrates’ Court after absconding trial.
The court heard that Tumai located Chinenge and Madzivadondo at a shop in the same area, advising them to proceed with him to court.
Further allegations are that Chinenge and Madzivadondo refused.
Chinenge allegedly started shouting at Tumai, who was clad in the police uniform.
The brothers allegedly arrived at the scene when Tumai had apprehended Chinenge by the waist.
Tumai also grabbed Never by the waist for interfering, giving room to Chinenge to escape. Chinenge is still on the run. Never reportedly shoved Tumai and took to his heels, picking up two half bricks and chased Tumai for a distance.
He allegedly apprehended and pushed him with his brother Lovemore arriving on the scene, punching Tumai on the neck and right eye.
He also tripped Tumai to the ground as Never joined in the assault by kicking the defenceless officer.
This prompted Tumai to call for reinforcements from the station, leading the duo to escape in his car.
