$140 000 facelift for Gutu roads

- George Maponga Masvingo Bureau

GUTU Rural District Council (RDC) has so far injected nearly $ 140 000 to rehabilitate and upgrade the battered road network at Mpandawana.

Council embarked on road rehabilitation using some funds provided by t he Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) while additional funds came from internal sources.

Gutu RDC chief executive officer Mr Alexander Mutembwa yesterday said council had rehabilitated and upgraded nearly 10kms of road in and around Mpandawana.

He said council will continue investing more resources to upgrade the town’s road network to attract investment.

“We managed to surface new roads i n an area near Mpandawana turn- off junction where we have serviced new commercial stands that are already on sale,’’ he said.

“Council also surfaced roads straddling for about 1,3 kilometres in Hwiru township that were in bad shape and we hope to continueinvesting more resources until our roads are in a better shape,” said Mr Mutembwa.

Gutu RDC had also rehabilitated more than 6km of gravel rounds within Mpandawana to make sure the roads were in good shape before the onset of the rain season.

“We used $25 000 from our internal resources and an allocation of $113 000 from Zinara to embark on the road rehabilitation and upgrading exercise,’’ he said.

Besides rehabilitating roads at Mpandawana, council has also invested money to resuscitate the town’s collapsed street lighting system.

Gutu RDC has so far sunk tens of thousands of dollars to install street lights on a major road stretching for 2,5 km from Mpandawana turn- off along the Harare-Roy highway to the town centre.

Mpandawana is now Masvingo’s second town after Chiredzi and council has been trying to invest in the moderninisation of infrastructure to woo investment.
