Chinhoyi to double water capacity

CHINHOYI Municipality intends to double its water pumping capacity from 16 megalitres to 30 megalitres per day, as it moves to avert a water crisis that has threatened to cripple the growth of the provincial capital.

Municipality spokesperson Mr Tichaona Mlauzi said the local authority had since engaged its partners in expanding Chinhoyi’s water augmentation.

“We are inviting partners who are willing to work with us in expanding our pumping capacity,” he said.

“A lot of water is needed to cater for all housing schemes in Chinhoyi. We are currently pumping 16 megalitres of water per day, which is why some housing schemes have inadequate water supply, but we are looking forward to increasing this to at least 30 megalitres per day.”

Mr Mlauzi said the optimal level was 30 megalitres per day and they would eventually increase pumping capacity to 40 megalitres per day to aid growth.

“The optimal level is 30 megalitres per day and this will ensure adequate water supply to all houses in Chinhoyi,” he said.

“We are looking forward to expanding the pumping to about 40 megalitres to give room for growth. We are working towards becoming a city, so we have factored in an extra 10 megalitres to allow for the growth.”

The local authority has rehabilitated at least 3,3km of road network using the $219 000 from the National Road Fund availed by the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration and funds from its coffers.

Mr Mlauzi said council had so far rehabilitated the town’s major roads.

The city has since rehabilitated 1,3km on Midway Road, 0,6km on Montrose, 0,2km on Megawatt link, 0,5km on North Drive and 0,7km on Park Street at a combined cost of $189 000.
