Kudos to the High Court on ‘alien’ vote
EDITOR — Voting has always been known to enable people to elect leaders, which will have an impact on their lives from education to health care to homeland security, hence voting is an important right in our society.
By voting, you are making your voice heard and registering your opinion on how you think the government should operate.
The High Court has made a very important decision by ruling that “aliens” can now vote in general elections if they provide proof that one of their parents was born in Southern Africa.
This move will give all “aliens” a feeling of belonging as they have been considered in making decisions in the political realm.
There is need for us to rule that one becomes eligible to vote once you stay for about five years (consecutive) in one country without considering where they come from.
Allowing non-citizens to vote is a very good thing because it gives them a sense of belonging. It also gives them pride in participating in all national development efforts.
The remaining elephant in the room is what will be done to facilitate registration and voting for three million plus potential Zimbabwean voters in the Diaspora.
I’m sure with the current global support for President Mnangagwa, UN donor finance can now be found to implement voting facilities for Zimbabweans in the Diaspora.
