Kariba villagers bemoan run-down infrastructure

VILLAGERS in Makande in Kariba District have urged Government to work on dilapidated infrastructure in the area that include roads and bridges.

Kariba House of Assembly member Cde Isaac Mackenzie said the district was one of the least developed in the country. He said more needed to be done to improve the situation.

A villager, Mr Maxwell Mazende, said attention should be given to the construction of bridges on Kanyati and Nyadara rivers. Mr Mazende called for urgent Government intervention as infrastructure was a key enabler for economic development.

“During the rainy season, some of the roads are not usable as rivers would be flooded,” he said.

“The problem also affects business people and those in need of social amenities. We need bridges to solve the perennial problem we are facing.”

A teacher at Makande Secondary School, who preferred anonymity, said absence of bridges was affecting pupils.

“The absence of bridges on Kanyati and Nyadara rivers are a problem for pupils and the community who find it difficult to cross to either sides of the rivers,” he said.

“Crocodile attacks are also rampant during the rainy season as people will be trying to cross those flooded rivers.”

The villagers bemoaned the poor state of roads.

“This area has a strong potential for economic development as it is a tourist attraction,” said another villager.

“Improvement in infrastructure will yield positive results for the area and nation as a whole.”
