Police must regain public trust, faith

-

EDITOR — We patiently wait to see if the police will restore the public trust they lost. What is needed is an independent platform where complaints are send to, even if it means the President’s Office.

Police protect themselves. There are instances whereby the officer who notes your query pretends to be sympathising with you, but in actual fact she/ he will be just acting.

The public no longer trusts the police based on past performance.

We are not saying motorists are innocent, but to target them, and not actual criminals is evil.

I remember police officers based at Hatfield Police Station even harassing a motorist going for a church service in front of their police station.

Imagine denying people the right to worship because of a possibly very offence.

As compared to the army experience during the past month or so, the police have a tall order to spruce themselves up.

How can you have a roadblock, just by the boom gate at Mbare Musika, another at Matapi Police Station and another before Kelvin Corner? All these were targeting the same vehicles.

The police should deploy these officers to protect people’s property, instead of making their lives harder. The police complaints platform will not work for the time being, because of the tarnished image police has made for themselves.

It will take time for the public to finally trust the police again, but in the meantime, the police has to work towards regaining what has been lost.
