Drive to arrive alive

-

EDITOR — The Christmas holiday is a time for merrymaking with family and friends. It is a time for people to visit their rural homes, go for vacation locally while others go to countries like Dubai and South Africa for the holidays.

But with merrymaking, some people get over excited and indulge in many things.

Some drink excessively and drive, others fight and injure each other, while criminals take advantage and break into unsecured homes.

It is in this spirit that as people enjoy, they should not drink and drive to avoid unnecessary loss of life due to road traffic accidents.

Speeding should be avoided at all costs as it is one of the major causes of accidents.

The public transport sector is of great concern as they carry large numbers of people.

I urge passengers to confront public transport drivers who drive recklessly. However, the challenge is some passengers seem comfortable with speeding drivers that if one person complains they just look at him or her like they are crazy. The person who complains is also harassed by kombi crews who even threaten to drop them off without a refund. As such, some end up not complaining. This should not be allowed to go on.

People should also ensure that if leaving home for a number of days, they alert their neighbours of their absence, the police and maybe leave one person to stay guard. I pray for an accident free holiday season.

I hope you all enjoy Christmas Day and the New Year. Ropafadzo Moyo, Harare.
