- Freedom Mupanedemo

A WOMAN from Chachacha Business Centre in Shurugwi has been arrested after throwing her newly born baby boy into a Blair toilet.

The baby was retrieved alive by the police with the help of villagers after it was heard screaming by a villager who had gone to the toilet to relieve herself. However, the infant died upon admission at Shurugwi District Hospital.

The local traditional leader, Chief Ndanga, confirmed the incident, which occurred last Wednesday.

The suspect has been identified as Tendai Hogoro (22), who resides at the business centre cottages.

“The suspect mother was arrested and detained at Chachacha Police Base before she was transferred to Shurugwi Police Station.

“It was a sad development. Villagers gathered and helped destroy the blair toilet at the business centre to retrieve the baby,” said the traditional leader.

He said the baby, which was soaked in human waste, was rushed to hospital but died upon admission.

The traditional leader said there have been reports of child dumping at Chachacha Business Centre.

Sources said Hogoro was arrested after police got a tip-off.

Acting police spokesperson for Midlands province Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende said she was yet to get the details of the matter.
