Brisk business for tailors

- Walter Mswazie Masvingo Correspondent

TAILORS in Masvingo experienced brisk business during the festive season as demand for tailor-made clothes keeps rising.

According to a recent survey, most fashion designers in Masvingo were busy making clothes for customers, especially those attending weddings.

The designers revealed that they were overwhelmed by orders, with others failing to cope.

Felly Designers director Ms Enjura Sozinyu, who operates along Hofmeyer Street, said her shop was overwhelmed by orders, especially from women who brought their own material.

“We have never been busy like this during the festive season,” she said.

“The demand is too much as we are receiving not less than 15 orders per day since the beginning of the festive season.”

Ms Sozinyu attributed the pressure to Christmas and New Year holidays, as many people take advantage to have their weddings, parties or other family gatherings.

“We are in the festive period where families gather for weddings and social parties,” she said.

“Most of our customers are women who bring their materials for designing African attires. We also receive orders for school uniforms, but most of them bring their children’s uniforms for adjustment.”

Mr Menard Chiriga, who operates at Guni House along Greenfields Street, said the business suddenly improved towards the Christmas holiday.

“We have many orders for people’s clothes, some of them are for January,” said Mr Chiriga.

“As we speak, we have a backlog of materials that we have to work on before the end of the year.

“We sometimes refer some customers to other tailors, given the pressure we have. I do not think we will be able to finish as most of the clothes are needed before the year ends.”

Mr Chiriga said due to pressure and prices of commodities they had also been forced to increase prices.
