Motswako’s Ghetto Fabulous Dream

- Robert Mukondiwa

NEW Year’s explosions, fireworks, lights, camera, action. Glitz and glamour; all that defines the perfect ingredients for a great ushering in of the New Year.

And Zimbabweans joined the rest of the world trying to usher in the New Year in super style with pomp and fanfare; the works.

It was the same story the world over.

Some went to Time Square in New York.

Others were in Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton, South Africa. In Zimbabwe others made a beeline for Africa Unity Square—for the Meikles; the Mecca of ushering in the New Year in Zimbabwe where fireworks displays always are the pulse of the nation’s joy.

Curiously though, others made their way to Glen Noah ‘B’.

In the heart of the ghetto, what could attract such numbers to such an unlikely place in the capital? A simply one word answer. Motswako!

A new join that provides an upmarket theme for drinking and revelling yet in the heart of the ghetto, Motswako is the newborn of the township tourism phenomenon and judging from the fact that the place has not even been officially opened, the prospect that this may soon be the ‘go to’ place in the capital come this year is almost certain.

And many joy seeking revellers managed to beat the ‘offside trap’ of going to a technically ‘unopened’ place, making their way to Motswako pre-official opening for what proved to be a memorable start to the year 2018.

A large sculptured gentle giant stands defiant in the heart of the grey and red building, whose licks of red paint on the walls are delightful and enticing at the same time.

“We are sure when we are done with the fixtures and fittings and make an official opening here, Glen Norah will never be the same again,” bellows the giant.

He is Freddy Mujiwa, the manager of the soon to be officially opened joint.

He has hair raising confidence in his product.

“We shall be upmarket yet affordable, capturing the spirit of the ghetto yet giving sharpened service in comfort and safety,” he adds.

“His dream of bringing in well trained bouncers to make sure security and safety are beefed up is probably enough to make the ‘ghettophobic’ comfortable, knowing their safety is guaranteed while the make a foray into a part of the city that they may not always frequent.

And on New Year’s Eve into the New Year, the ‘pedigree’ of the reveller was evidence that class had come to the ghetto both local high-end spenders and ‘north of Samora Machel’ types.

With the legendary Masimba, DJ Simak on the decks, the night becomes magical!

The proprietor adds his tip on his dream.

Young entrepreneur Ian Tafireyi lays out his dream as the fireworks usher in a New Year.

“We shall have events and programmes here that shall prove that the ghetto can be classy, unique, attractive and an experience to remember and return to,” said Tafireyi.

The ghetto has been gentrified. The ghetto will never be the same again!
