Police names accident victims

POLICE have released names of six family members who died in a traffic accident in Masvingo on Sunday, as the force continues to express concern over the increase in fatal accidents countrywid­e.

In a statement, chief police spokespers­on Senior Assistant Commission­er Charity Charamba said the accident victims’ next of kin had been informed.

The six are Kudakwashe Jani (31), Cecilia Mpalasa (46), Savannah Jani (two months), Beatrice Mpalasa (55), all of Zvishavane, Linny Fungai Manyangadz­e (35) and Anna Mahere (31) both of Masvingo.

“The accident occurred along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway near Exor Shopping Centre in Masvingo city after the driver of a Higer Bus overtook another vehicle in front of an oncoming vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision,” Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.

She said as a result of the accident, three people died on the spot while the other three died on admission at Masvingo General Hospital.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is deeply concerned with the loss of lives in road accidents,” she said.

“We are urging motorists to avoid speeding and to exercise caution when travelling.”

In another accident in Masvingo on Sunday, two people were seriously injured when a vehicle they were travelling in collided head-on with a bus that was avoiding another bus parked at the six-kilometre peg along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road.
