ZION Christian Church (ZCC) youths yesterday carried out a clean-up campaign at Copacabana, Market Square bus terminuses, including along Chinhoyi Street, as they gear up for their forthcoming conference to be held at the National Sports Stadium.

In an interview with The Herald yesterday, vice chairperson of ZCC youth Mr Jasper Mangwana said the clean-up exercise was in sync with the theme for this year’s conference “the year of the shining star”.

“We are carrying out a clean-up campaign in order to prepare for Harare (the) round up, which is a national event that is being held on the 4th of February.

“We are being supported by EMA (Environmental Management Agency), Forestry Commission and Harare City Council,” said Mr Mangwana.

The clean-up campaign, he said, was a way of teaching youths the virtue of maintaining a healthy and clean environment instead of abusing drugs.

“Youths are abusing drugs and as ZCC youths, we are saying you can clean your city (and) restore the Sunshine city; instead of abusing drugs, team up and do something productive,” he said.

“We are setting up a good example. We are saying to the youths out there, do something good, keep your city clean and avoid typhoid and cholera.

“We did the campaigns in so many cities like Gweru, Masvingo, Bulawayo, Kwekwe and we did a massive clean-up in Chegutu where there was an outbreak,” said Mr Mangwana.

“We have been doing this in rural areas, so we decided to come here and clean the city and encourage youth.”

A ZCC youth member, Ms Thelma Mahafa, said she was excited that they were providing a good service to their city.

“I am excited and happy that as youths we have managed to set a good example. Everyone is happy about what we are doing today,” said Ms Mahafa.

During the clean-up campaign, they encouraged youths to avoid littering.
