FOUR armed robbers pounced on Montana Caswell Meats in Nyakamete industrial area in Mutare where they assaulted the security guard on duty before disappearing with a communication radio, a Samsung phone and a satchel.

The incident happened on Sunday at around 3am.

Manicaland deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed the robbery.

According to the police, the security guard, Kasirai Chibvongodze (42), was approached by four robbers who wanted to steal from the premises.

The robbers were allegedly armed with guns and batons.

They fired shots in the air to scare him. When Chibvongodze tried to raise alarm, they hit him on the forehead with a baton before tying him up with his scarf.

They took his communication radio, Samsung phone and a satchel.

“The gang proceeded to the administration office, broke in and attempted to blow the safe with detonators, but failed.

“The guard only managed to untie himself and notified his colleagues at Fawcett Security who attended the scene,” said Asst Inspector Chanda.

The robbers, who are still at large, fled the scene when Fawcett Security details arrived.

Assistant Inspector Chananda urged businesses and individuals to increase security and adopt security drills that make it difficult for robbers to strike.

“Having security guards, close circuit television (CCTV) and adopting security standards that are strictly adhered to can assist in reducing chances of robberies,” he said.

He appealed to anyone who may have information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact their nearest police station.

Meanwhile, a Morningside man, Stawa Chidawu (28), was robbed at gunpoint by two unknown male adults on Saturday.

The robbers approached him and told him to deactivate his alarm, before ordering him to surrender all his money.

Chidawu refused and activated the alarm. The robbers fled the scene after tying him up and firing shots.

They, however, managed to go away with a cellphone.
