Kariba, IDBZ in $14m property development deal
KARIBA is set to receive a major facelift after the local authority struck a $14 million property development deal with the Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe (IDBZ).
The funds are expected to be used to service 1 550 low, medium and high-density residential stands in Kasese, Baobab and Batonga, respectively.
The project is expected to be completed within the context of Government’s 100-day programme.
Kariba Municipality director of housing and community services Mr Godfrey Tichaona Magijani yesterday said the project has since begun.
“We have embarked on the housing projects in partnership with IDBZ and we are currently servicing 1 550 residential stands at a cost of $14 million,” he said.
“There are 109 low-density stands in Baobab area and the upmarket stands are suitable for lodges and chalets.
“Roads have already been opened and sub-grading is in progress.”
He said there were also 213 stands in Batonga High-Density Suburb, where roads have also been constructed while sub-grading was in progress.
“Water and sewer lines are being excavated, while 43 houses belonging to the Zimbabwe Power Company have already been constructed in the area.
“Lastly, a further 1 441 stands are in Kasese area, which is going to be a mixed-density township. Opening of roads is now complete, excavation and laying of sewer pipes in progress, as well as excavation of a reservoir.”
Mr Magijani added: “Part of the 1 550 stands are 391 that will be used for the relocation of Mahombekombe residents, who are staying under the 330kv Power lines.” He said through the IDBZ partnership, they were also going to venture into water and sewer augmentation.
“We are upgrading Breezes Water Works and Nyamhunga Sewer Ponds to cater for ongoing housing developments,” he said.
Plans are also underway to partner some foreign investors for the establishment of a golf course, a conference facility, campsite, retail facilities and harbour at Mopani Bay, including the development of a 43 hectare piece of land overlooking the mighty Kariba Dam.
Mr Magijani also said council had funded the revival of the Kariba Publicity Association, which is at the forefront of marketing the town as a tourist destination.
He said funding had been extended to KPA’s participation at international travel expos both locally and internationally.
